The Harlequins Foundation’s Response to the Government’s Education Catch-Up Funding Announcement

Last week, the UK Government announced a £1bn funding package aimed at helping children catch up on the education they have missed out on during the lockdown period.

Head of Foundation, Marc Leckie, has made the following statement in response.

“We welcome the government’s decision to provide this much needed funding, which will support young people in our local community and across the UK.

“This period has been very difficult for children and families, and this funding will allow students who have missed out on vital learning time to catch up, and put them in the best position to succeed in the future.

“We are particularly pleased to see the £300 million commitment to a National Tutoring Programme, which will support the most disadvantaged young people in society.

“At The Harlequins Foundation, we work with many disadvantaged young people who have struggled to access mainstream education. Our programmes show the power that targeted and tailored intervention can have on the lives of disadvantaged young people, so we welcome this renewed commitment from the government at such an important time.

“Our partnership with SkillsBuilder has helped us create a varied approach to learning, helping young people develop the skills they need to succeed. As we head into a new period, we are committed to helping schools and other education settings across our Heartland boroughs to meet their commitments, working with them to build a brighter future for as many young people as we can.”
