Growing Grassroots Rugby Virtually

The Harlequins Foundation are excited to be taking Rugby online, teaching hundreds of local young people about the game and it’s values, thanks to support for ‘Project Rugby’ from Premiership Rugby and Gallagher.

Project Rugby is a joint initiative between Premiership Rugby clubs and Gallagher, which is designed to introduce the game to new audiences that have been traditionally underrepresented in the past – including; Black, Asian and other Ethnic Minorities, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds and people with disabilities.

Our coaches are working closely with a network of partner secondary schools throughout Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston, to support them in keeping young people engaged with sports and physical activity as well as developing essential skills such as; Teamwork, Leadership, Staying Positive, and Problem-Solving, thanks to our Skills Builder Coaching Toolkit.

"Thanks Sir, this is the best online PE lesson we have had this term."

"The pandemic has had a significant impact on all of us, not least children and young people. Many of whom have missed out on sports and recreation with their friends for several months, the impact of which could be felt for years to come. That is why, ahead of a return this summer, we aim to inject some excitement around grassroots rugby, and support as many young people and clubs as possible to ensure we can hit the ground running when lockdown ends."

Matthew Williams, Schools Manager at The Harlequins Foundation

On top of this work in schools, The Harlequins Foundation have also brought together members of the Harlequins ‘rugby family’ to provide some much-needed motivation for any aspiring young players out there who perhaps can’t wait to get going. Our #ClubTogether campaign taking place across social media, will see famous Harlequins faces sharing their tips for surviving lockdown, as well as setting some exciting skills challenges for young people to take part in from home. Check out The Harlequins Foundation’s social media platforms to see how you can get involved.

As an added bonus, for the entire Spring Term, we’re also providing a free weekly home workout session where we’ll be joined by a famous Harlequins guest coach. Each session is free to join, and designed for all abilities aged 8-16 years as a chance to have fun and get active during lockdown. You can sign up for free by completing this short sign up form.
