The Men’s Health Week runs 10-16 June 2019. In the UK, Men have worse health than women, are more likely to die prematurely and visit their GP half as often. They are more likely to die from cancer, be obese, smoke or to commit suicide.

In addition, one-in-ten men already has diabetes and thousands more either don’t know they have it or are at serious risk of it. In Richmond, each year 345 people are told they have diabetes. There are already an estimated 11,825 local people living with diabetes of whom 5,385 with Type 2 diabetes are known to their GP. Another 15,000 are on the verge of getting it.

Men aged 35-54 are almost twice as likely to have diabetes compared to women.

This year, we are looking at some of the top ‘facts’ around Men’s Health, including:

  • 1 man in 5 dies before the age of 65.
  • NHS health checks are available from age 40 – 74 years, if eligible
  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight. Over 30 is considered obese
  • A waist over 37 inches puts you at increased risk of many serious health conditions
  • Aim to drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week
  • Aim for 5 portions of fruit and veg a day
  • Aim for 150 minutes of exercise a week
  • Aim to walk 10k steps a day

Diabetes Prevention:

Around three in five cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and being active. We support Richmond residents to find out their risk of diabetes and offer a local service to help reduce their risk. Use our Know Your Risk tool to find out how likely you are to develop diabetes.

NHS Health Checks Free NHS Health Checks are available to people aged between 40 and 74 years. They can help assess your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes. You are entitled to one free Health Check every five years.

Alcohol Checker We have created a DrinkChecker to help people to understand more about alcohol and its effects. The website has an alcohol drink check test to support residents to recognise if drinking is harming their health, signposting to advice, support and treatment if necessary.

Richmond Stop Smoking Service

Richmond Stop Smoking Service offers free help, advice and access to stop smoking medications to all smokers who live or work in the Richmond area.

You are four times more likely to stop smoking for good if you use a local stop smoking service to advise and offer you regular support and information. Find out more.
