“Harlequins EDU”: Using Sport to Inspire the Next Generation through Education

The Harlequins Foundation is proud to launch their latest education initiative, ‘Harlequins EDU’; a comprehensive learning hub which takes inspiration from one of the world’s most famous rugby clubs, Harlequin F.C., to inspire the next generation with a range of downloadable teaching and learning resources.

Whilst many children and young people may have been unable to take part in sport for several months due to the impact of the pandemic, The Harlequins Foundation has taken this as an opportunity to develop a broad range of exciting educational content, in line with the national curriculum, whilst harnessing the power of sport to support pupils in developing their essential skills across subjects such as; Science, Technology, Engineering (Design), Art, Maths, Geography, History & PSHE.

The Harlequins Foundation is today launching a suite of primary-focussed education content with a particular emphasis on S.T.E.A.M education. In line with the Skills Builder framework, which holds the national standard for teaching essential skills, The Harlequins Foundation are pleased to have created an innovative suite of resources which also supports pupils to develop their essential skills such as; problem-solving, creativity, speaking, listening, teamwork and staying positive.

‘Harlequins EDU’ covers not only the core STEAM subjects, but also uses the world of sport and the Harlequins brand to bring subjects such as Geography, History and PSHE to life in a way that can excite and engage the next generation of pupils.

This new online learning hub comprises of the following across all eight subjects: unit overviews, individual lesson plans, pupil worksheets, a range of engaging and interactive learning tasks as well as guidance on possible avenues for extension activities. Importantly, all eight of the subjects provided in this initial launch are made available in a way that can be used in any learning context, whether pupils are in the classroom, isolated or home-schooling.

A teacher from a Hounslow primary school, where the resources were tested, said: “The Harlequins Foundation’s resources provide a range of cross curricular activities that encourage engagement and creativity while developing a range of skills.

“The clearly structured tasks, supported by quality resources, give opportunities for independent learning and collaboration.

“They provide everything you need to deliver a variety of lessons that are sure to spark curiosity in your pupils.”

Matthew Williams, Schools Manager for The Harlequins Foundation, said: “We’re really excited to be launching our latest initiative, ‘Harlequins Edu’, providing schools with a range of unique and exciting educational resources which helps them support pupils in developing essential skills such as speaking & listening, problem-solving, creativity and teamwork, in line with our Skills Builder Framework.

“At a time where sport has become a distant memory for so many young people, we truly believe in these resources and their ability to support young people in continuing with their education and keeping that passion for sport alive.”
