An Evening with Eammon Ashton-Atkinson, Drew McDowell, and Nic Evans

28th February 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

To mark the end of LGBT History Month, The Harlequins Foundation are delighted to invite you to attend “An Evening with Eammon Ashton-Atkinson, Drew McDowell, and Nic Evans” to celebrate the release of ‘Steelers’: a documentary about the world’s first gay rugby club, the Kings Cross Steelers.

Eammon, the film’s director, Drew, one of the documentary’s central characters, and their former Director of Rugby, Nic Evans, will discuss their own respective journeys, the role rugby has played in their lives, and why the world needed to hear this story.

In 2018, an injury prevented Eammon from participating in the biennial IGR Bingham Cup in Amsterdam, but instead focused his attention on following the team’s progress in the tournament. The documentary also spotlights two Steelers players, Simon Jones and Drew McDowell; as well as Nic Evans, the club’s inspiring female coach at the time.

The Kings Cross Steelers began in 1995, when a group of six friends sat in a pub discussing the possibility of launching a gay rugby club. Today, it stands tall as the world’s first gay rugby club celebrating its 25-year anniversary.

‘Steelers’, which has received positive reviews from The Times and The BBC, premiers at the Glasgow Film Festival on Friday 26th February to March 1st 2021.
